ICELANDIC DUO HUGAR ENTER THE FESTIVE SEASON WITH THEIR OWN RENDITION OF AN ICELANDIC CHRISTMAS HYMN

Formidable Icelandic duo Hugar are releasing their very own take on a Christmas single with this special instrumental version of the old Icelandic Christmas hymn Hátíð fer að höndum ein. The song, reflecting both the lights and hope of the festive season and the long darkness of Icelandic winter will be released digitally worldwide on November 27 via Sony Music Masterworks.
The song, whose title means “A holiday is coming”, is an old Icelandic hymn that Icelanders have grown up hearing at this time of the year. Hugar explains “The melody is truly special and just gives you that yuletide feeling while still sending you a reminder that it gets very cold this time of year so you should probably just stay inside by the fire.”
When Bergur Þórisson and Pétur Jónsson self-released their eponymous debut album in 2014, they were a pair of talented local musicians from Seltjarnarnes, the smallest township in Iceland, just outside of Reykjavík. Six years later, they have collaborated with their country’s leading artists Björk, Sigur Rós, Ólafur Arnalds and Jóhann Jóhannson, and have toured across Europe and abroad. International praise followed from The Independent, Rolling Stone, Clash, KEXP and The Line of Best Fit, they racked up 52 million streams and counting, and released their fully formed major-label debut, Varða, on Sony Music Masterworks. Their sophomore album released on Sony in October 2020 – The Vasulka Effect: Music for the Motion Picture – originated as a soundtrack to a film documentary about video-art pioneers Vasulka.
